    Hi:

    A new year is upon us again. But this year - 2010 in the Western calendar - marks a very special New Year\'s celebration for NYI.

    You see, NYI was founded exactly 100 years ago! Imagine how different photography was then. There were no digital cameras. There were no "miniature" cameras - what we would call SLRs. There were no "point-and-shoot" cameras. Rather, cameras were either big wooden boxes used by pros with unwieldy glass plates as "film," or they were small "Kodaks" for amateurs that contained a roll of 12-exposure film that had to be mailed to Kodak for processing.

    Imagine how far photography has advanced in these hundred years - from glass-based plates to vinyl-based film to silicon-based digital cards. And yet...successful photographs have changed hardly at all.

    Whether exposed on a glass plate, a roll of film, or a digital card, a successful photograph contains certain timeless elements. And these elements have been the backbone of NYI training since we wrote our first lesson 100 years ago. We call them the "three Guidelines." You are introduced to them in your very first NYI lesson...and they remain the centerpiece of your training throughout the entire Course.

    These three Guidelines have been the reason that NYI training has remained the epitome of great photographic training throughout these 100 years. Why? Because they guide you to make successful pictures - great pictures - regardless of the nature of the camera or the "film" you use. These Guidelines are fundamental. They are timeless. They\'ve stood the test of time for 100 years now.

    And I firmly believe that 100 years from now - in a future where we cannot even guess at the wondrous cameras and "film" of the day - these same three Guidelines will continue to serve as the guide to making great photographs!

    So congratulations on your taking the NYI Course today. If you follow the three Guidelines now and in the future, you are assure of taking successful pictures. Remember, great photographers have achieved success for 100 years now by following these same three NYI Guidelines!
